Our History
After worshiping for 70 years at First Church of Christ in downtown Suffield, the families in the west part of town established the Second Ecclesiastical Society, with the approval of the General Court in Northampton, on November 10, 1743.
The first meeting house was built in 1744 on what was known as “Ireland Plain,” now the southwestern corner of the West Suffield Cemetery. In the early church plain boards were used as seats, there was no heat or light except that brought in by the worshipers, and the only aid to singing was a pitch pipe.
In 1775, a second meeting house was erected on the site of the present building. It was rebuilt in 1839 using the earlier foundation. The church parlors were added in 1879 and the educational wing was dedicated in 1958.
